US Visa Interview Questions and Answers 2026

The most critical stage of the United States (B1/B2) tourist and business visa applications is undoubtedly the face-to-face consular interview. No matter how flawlessly you have filled out your form, this short interview is where you must convince the visa officer (consular official).

Here are the most frequently encountered questions in US visa interviews in 2026 and the ideal types of answers to give:

1. What is the purpose of your trip?

This is the most classic and absolutely the first question that will be asked. Your answer should be short, clear, and 100% consistent with your DS-160 form.

• Wrong Answer: "I want to travel a bit, and if I find an opportunity, I want to work." (Reason for rejection!)
• Right Answer: "I am going for tourism. I am planning a 2-week vacation in New York and Washington." or "I am going to attend the technology fair (CES) in Las Vegas on behalf of my company."

2. How long do you intend to stay?

Visa officers look at people planning to stay in the US for a long time as potential immigrants. Therefore, you must state a reasonable duration.

• Wrong Answer: "6 months" (If you are only going for a vacation, your budget for a 6-month vacation and the leave you can take from your job will be questioned.)
• Right Answer: State realistic durations like "2 weeks", "10 days". You can reference your flight tickets (if any) and the leave letter you received from your workplace.

3. Who is paying for your trip?

This is asked to understand if your financial situation is sufficient to cover this trip. If you are a working person, you should say that you are covering the expenses yourself. If you are a student or unemployed, you must specify your sponsor (usually parents or spouse).

4. What do you do for a living?

Having a regular job is the best way to prove your ties to Turkey (binding factors). Briefly explain your profession and how many years you have been working at the same company.

• Make eye contact and be confident.
• Do not say anything that is not written on your DS-160 form, and do not contradict anything you have written.
• Do not unnecessarily drag out things that are not asked. Just give a clear answer to the question asked.
• Even if the officer speaks Turkish, if you speak English well, you can state that you want to conduct the interview in English. If you do not know it, you can continue in Turkish, this is not a disadvantage.
